05-09-2026 - 6:10 AM - Good Morning! It’s Saturday, and we got a little rain last night without damaging winds or hail. That’s always good. We have more rain chances on Sunday. Our local Amateur (ham) Radio storm spotters have been getting a lot of practice lately. Area Ham radio Operators usually meet informally for breakfast at 8:00 AM at the Pioneer #3 restaurant at Old Iowa Park Road and Sheppard Access Road. If you have Ham Radio questions, they probably have answers. Look for extra antennas on vehicles, and/or handheld radios on tables inside. My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready.

--- 8:05 AM - Some Wichita Falls weekend radio scanning targets: Walmart 154.570 MHz, Allred Unit 153.815 MHz, Wichita County Jail 155.520 MHz, State Hospital 154.800 MHz city transit buses 453.5375 MHz, Wichita Valley Airport 122.800 MHz, Kickapoo Airport 122.700 MHz, Wichita Falls Regional Airports / SAFB 119.750 & 122.950 MHz, FAA ATC Fort Worth Center 132.925 MHz, and the BNSF Railroad 160.920 MHz. MORE!

--- 8:25 AM - Continuing my rant about the north side of Wichita Falls: You would think that Sheppard Access Road and Burkburnett Road from one end of Sheppard Air Force Base to the other would be one of the most beautiful areas in town. After all, these roads serve our biggest employer and a temporary home to visitors from around the world. Yet, it remains, for as long as I can remember, a totally uninteresting, uninviting area. I remember one person who thought it was silly that Walmart built a store on the north side of town. I reminded him about SAFB, and he said, "Oh." If not for SAFB, I guess his thoughts would have been, "To Hell with the Northside residents." I suppose a lot of people had that sentiment because, before Walmart, if you wanted a hammer or wrench, you had to drive to the south side of town to get it. Remember, K-Mart had closed, and Sutherlands had moved to the south. Northside was a commercial ghost town. It's still a commercial ghost town!

--- 10:30 AM - The license-free Multi-Use Radio Service is perfect for Wichita Falls. While the radios are relatively low in power, FCC rules allow for external antennas. Fixed stations with antennas 15 - 20 feet in the air, will be able to communicate across the entire city with crisp, clear FM signals. After all, we're less than 15 miles across at the widest point.

--- 10:40 AM - Forty years ago, Domino’s Pizza offered a guarantee: your pizza would be delivered in 30 minutes or less, or they would shave $2.00 off the price. Remember, that was a sizeable percentage of the cost back then. I used that guarantee once to save $2, but I gave it to the driver. They discontinued this offer after a decade, discovering an increase in the frequency of driver traffic accidents. I read one account of a $78 Million settlement over a fatal accident.

--- 10:45 AM - The 20-meter Amateur (ham) Radio band has yet to fully awaken. When it does, I might look for a Parks on the Air® station to contact. Until then, I’ll monitor activity on the CB Radio and scanner radio.

--- 11:00 AM - When my father was assigned to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio the first time, in 1960, we lived off-base for a while. I remember a flatbed truck with wooden railings on the sides, loaded with sugarcane, driving down our street, and kids in the back throwing pieces into the yards of the neighborhood. I don’t know if this was a regular thing, as we soon moved onto the base.

--- 12:15 PM - I have just learned that the CB Club of Central Texas has a net every Sunday night at 8:00 PM on Channel 28, and that they’re having a “member meet-up and BBQ” today at 1:00 PM in Leander, Texas. Wow!

--- 12:30 PM - There’s a decent amount of local trucking traffic today, with familiar drivers greeting each other as they come and go. What I don’t hear as much as I used to is CB radio from our local truck stops. There are not as many catfights about the fuel pumps. Of course, our truck stops aren’t exactly huge. I miss the days when the chrome shop next to the Flying J would include singing in its Channel 19 ads.

--- 6:10 PM - The "Local Group" is up and running on CB Radio Channel 23 here in Wichita Falls. They've been meeting nightly on this channel for years. CB Radio is dead! Long live CB Radio!

--- 7:00 PM - According to a Museum of North Texas History Facebook post, August’s Pies was started by August H. Moeller in Wichita Falls in 1937. The original location was 1500 North 6th Street. In the 1950s, Moeller opened a bakery in Lubbock and moved the Wichita Falls location to 500 N. Broadway. That’s the location I remember, and the pies, available in local stores, were excellent. I don’t remember when the N. Broadway location closed, but United Supermarkets bought the business name and recipes in 2020. I know you could buy August’s Pies at United in Wichita Falls 10 - 15 years ago, but the quality wasn't good. To me, they tasted like they had been in transit for a month. I have not seen or heard of the pies in the past 10 years or more.
